In general, you may expect the following from the Queen Mary residences: Each student has a single bedroom with an attached bathroom. Mini- refrigerator in your single bedroom. Several rooms on a hall share a kitchen. Queen Mary halls are self- catering, which means that you will buy your own food and cook your own meals. Individual kitchen equipment is not provided but can be obtained upon arrival in London. Students are integrated with other Queen Mary students of all nationalities. Individual access points are available for Internet, but you are likely to incur an additional expense if your room has not been previously activated. Bedding pack- generally includes a duvet, pillow and sheets. If there is a shortage of on- campus housing at Queen Mary, students may be placed in IFSA- Butler housing in Notting Hill. If this applies to you, your program advisor will be in touch with more information about IFSA- Butler housing. What is living in London like? London is an exciting, vibrant and diverse city. Students who study in London should be aware that housing is always in short supply. For this reason, it may be very difficult to change rooms once you arrive. Queen Mary students will be housed on campus, a rare occurrence in London! However, commuting is the nature of studying and living in a large city like London, so students should expect to take public transportation to get around London. The cost of commuting by public transportation is your responsibility. Going into your study abroad experience with an open mind about your possible living arrangement is the best way to ensure a good semester or year abroad. Is Queen Mary's campus different than my university campus in the U. S.? Although Queen Mary is a self- contained campus, it is located in London's urban East End. Students used to a small, self- contained college campus in the U. S. Students will find a busy, urban, cosmopolitan setting. Relocating to a new country and living in one of the fastest paced cities in the world is an exciting but challenging experience. Students interested in attending Queen Mary must be prepared for a period of adjustment as they acclimate to London and the East End. Queen Mary's location affords students the unique opportunity to discover the multicultural and cosmopolitan side of London and British society. Because the East End of London has traditionally been a major port of entry for overseas arrivals to the United Kingdom, students will encounter people from many different ethnic and religious backgrounds. The East End is home to several famous landmarks, including the Tower Bridge, the Tower of London, Canary Wharf and the Docklands. East- Enders developed Britain's famous Cockney rhyming slang. The East End is becoming a very popular location for new nightclubs, art galleries and caf. The East End will also be the site of the 2. Summer Olympics in London. Past students have enjoyed discovering this up- and- coming cultural area of London. In the past, London's East End was sometimes characterized solely as a commercial and industrial area of the city. However, the East End, while still very urban, has undergone major economic revitalization and is now home to many young professionals and new businesses, in addition to being home to a religiously and ethnically diverse residential community. Queen Mary, University of London is about a 3. Tube (i. e. This means that students interested in a social life and events outside of the Queen Mary campus will have to commute by Tube into central London. Housing FAQs. Is my housing included in the program fee? Yes. Your program fee includes accommodation at the university while classes are in session. You will be responsible for the cost of your meals (whether a meal plan or self- catered) and any commuting costs you may incur. Your housing fee includes the cost of accommodation during university breaks. When will I receive my housing assignment? You will most likely receive your housing assignment one to two weeks before your departure. However, in some cases you may not receive your housing assignment until you arrive in England for orientation. Your program advisor will notify you of your housing assignment via e- mail when it is released by the university. Please keep in mind that while IFSA- Butler guarantees housing, we cannot guarantee your preferences. Do I have to pay a housing deposit? Yes. IFSA- Butler requires a refundable housing deposit of $3. We will return this deposit to you after March 1 for fall programs or September 1 for spring and year programs, less any fines, damages or outstanding debts in your name. Can I arrange my own housing? Yes. IFSA- Butler recognizes that some students require independent housing for their time abroad. If you choose not to take advantage of our guaranteed housing, you may sign up for independent housing on the housing preference form. Once you've made this choice, we will not provide housing for you or bill you for the accommodation fee. Please be advised that housing costs can be high abroad, and many times students living independently end up spending more money than students living in IFSA- Butler arranged housing. If you are hoping to save money by arranging housing on your own, please research your options early so you can compare costs. You must notify us of your intention to live in independent housing by the program application deadline for your term abroad, listed at the top of this page. One central question we will answer in this book is quite simple: how does the operating system virtualize resources? This is the only real youtube video that covers how to program an ope. This is the only real youtube video that covers how to program an operating system. Top 3 Worst And Best Operating System User. How to Make a Computer Operating System. Which applications can I use to program my operating system? That depends on the programming language you are using. Writing your own operating system.; Author: S Keller; Updated. Building your own operating system. I want to write greeting program run no operating system. Operating system - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. An operating system (OS) is system software that manages computer hardware and software resources and provides common services for computer programs. All computer programs, excluding firmware, require an operating system to function. Time- sharing operating systems schedule tasks for efficient use of the system and may also include accounting software for cost allocation of processor time, mass storage, printing, and other resources. For hardware functions such as input and output and memory allocation, the operating system acts as an intermediary between programs and the computer hardware. Operating systems are found on many devices that contain a computer . Other specialized classes of operating systems, such as embedded and real- time systems, exist for many applications. Types of operating systems. Single- and multi- tasking. A single- tasking system can only run one program at a time, while a multi- tasking operating system allows more than one program to be running in concurrency. This is achieved by time- sharing, dividing the available processor time between multiple processes that are each interrupted repeatedly in time slices by a task- scheduling subsystem of the operating system. Operating System Tutorial for. Learning operating system concepts in simple and easy. Communication, Error Handling, User Account Management, Multitasking, Real Time System, Process, Program, Memory Management, and.Multi- tasking may be characterized in preemptive and co- operative types. In preemptive multitasking, the operating system slices the CPU time and dedicates a slot to each of the programs. Define operating system: computers : the main program in a computer that controls the way the computer works and makes it possible for. Simple Definition of operating system. What made you want to look up operating system? Unix- like operating systems, e. Solaris, Linux, as well as Amiga. OS support preemptive multitasking. Cooperative multitasking is achieved by relying on each process to provide time to the other processes in a defined manner. Microsoft Windows used cooperative multi- tasking. Windows NT and Win. Single- and multi- user. Single- user operating systems have no facilities to distinguish users, but may allow multiple programs to run in tandem. Time- sharing operating systems schedule tasks for efficient use of the system and may also include accounting software for cost allocation of processor time, mass storage, printing, and other resources to multiple users. Distributed. A distributed operating system manages a group of distinct computers and makes them appear to be a single computer. The development of networked computers that could be linked and communicate with each other gave rise to distributed computing. Distributed computations are carried out on more than one machine. When computers in a group work in cooperation, they form a distributed system. The technique is used both in virtualization and cloud computing management, and is common in large server warehouses. They are designed to operate on small machines like PDAs with less autonomy. They are able to operate with a limited number of resources. They are very compact and extremely efficient by design. Windows CE and Minix 3 are some examples of embedded operating systems. Real- time. A real- time operating system is an operating system that guarantees to process events or data by a specific moment in time. A real- time operating system may be single- or multi- tasking, but when multitasking, it uses specialized scheduling algorithms so that a deterministic nature of behavior is achieved. An event- driven system switches between tasks based on their priorities or external events while time- sharing operating systems switch tasks based on clock interrupts. Library. A library operating system is one in which the services that a typical operating system provides, such as networking, are provided in the form of libraries. These libraries are composed with the application and configuration code to construct unikernels . Basic operating system features were developed in the 1. Operating systems did not exist in their modern and more complex forms until the early 1. When personal computers became popular in the 1. In the 1. 94. 0s, the earliest electronic digital systems had no operating systems. Electronic systems of this time were programmed on rows of mechanical switches or by jumper wires on plug boards. These were special- purpose systems that, for example, generated ballistics tables for the military or controlled the printing of payroll checks from data on punched paper cards. After programmable general purpose computers were invented, machine languages (consisting of strings of the binary digits 0 and 1 on punched paper tape) were introduced that sped up the programming process (Stern, 1. Each user had sole use of the computer for a limited period of time and would arrive at a scheduled time with program and data on punched paper cards or punched tape. The program would be loaded into the machine, and the machine would be set to work until the program completed or crashed. Programs could generally be debugged via a front panel using toggle switches and panel lights. It is said that Alan Turing was a master of this on the early Manchester Mark 1 machine, and he was already deriving the primitive conception of an operating system from the principles of the Universal Turing machine. This was the genesis of the modern- day operating system. However, machines still ran a single job at a time. At Cambridge University in England the job queue was at one time a washing line (clothes line) from which tapes were hung with different colored clothes- pegs to indicate job- priority. These features were included or not included in application software at the option of application programmers, rather than in a separate operating system used by all applications. In 1. 95. 9, the SHARE Operating System was released as an integrated utility for the IBM 7. IBSYS/IBJOB on the 7. During the 1. 96. IBM's OS/3. 60 introduced the concept of a single OS spanning an entire product line, which was crucial for the success of the System/3. IBM's current mainframe operating systems are distant descendants of this original system and applications written for OS/3. When the process is terminated for any reason, all of these resources are re- claimed by the operating system. The alternative CP- 6. S/3. 60- 6. 7 started a whole line of IBM operating systems focused on the concept of virtual machines. Other operating systems used on IBM S/3. IBM: COS/3. 60 (Compatibility Operating System), DOS/3. Disk Operating System), TSS/3. Time Sharing System), TOS/3. Tape Operating System), BOS/3. Basic Operating System), and ACP (Airline Control Program), as well as a few non- IBM systems: MTS (Michigan Terminal System), MUSIC (Multi- User System for Interactive Computing), and ORVYL (Stanford Timesharing System). Control Data Corporation developed the SCOPE operating system in the 1. In cooperation with the University of Minnesota, the Kronos and later the NOS operating systems were developed during the 1. Like many commercial timesharing systems, its interface was an extension of the Dartmouth BASIC operating systems, one of the pioneering efforts in timesharing and programming languages. In the late 1. 97. Control Data and the University of Illinois developed the PLATO operating system, which used plasma panel displays and long- distance time sharing networks. Plato was remarkably innovative for its time, featuring real- time chat, and multi- user graphical games. In 1. 96. 1, Burroughs Corporation introduced the B5. MCP, (Master Control Program) operating system. The B5. 00. 0 was a stack machine designed to exclusively support high- level languages with no machine language or assembler, and indeed the MCP was the first OS to be written exclusively in a high- level language . MCP also introduced many other ground- breaking innovations, such as being the first commercial implementation of virtual memory. During development of the AS/4. IBM made an approach to Burroughs to licence MCP to run on the AS/4. This proposal was declined by Burroughs management to protect its existing hardware production. MCP is still in use today in the Unisys. Clear. Path/MCP line of computers. UNIVAC, the first commercial computer manufacturer, produced a series of EXEC operating systems. Like all early main- frame systems, this batch- oriented system managed magnetic drums, disks, card readers and line printers. In the 1. 97. 0s, UNIVAC produced the Real- Time Basic (RTB) system to support large- scale time sharing, also patterned after the Dartmouth BC system. General Electric and MIT developed General Electric Comprehensive Operating Supervisor (GECOS), which introduced the concept of ringed security privilege levels. After acquisition by Honeywell it was renamed General Comprehensive Operating System (GCOS). Digital Equipment Corporation developed many operating systems for its various computer lines, including TOPS- 1. TOPS- 2. 0 time sharing systems for the 3. PDP- 1. 0 class systems. Before the widespread use of UNIX, TOPS- 1. ARPANET community. From the late 1. 96. Early systems had utilized microprogramming to implement features on their systems in order to permit different underlying computer architectures to appear to be the same as others in a series. In fact, most 3. 60s after the 3. The enormous investment in software for these systems made since the 1. Notable supported mainframe operating systems include: Microcomputers. PC DOS was an early personal computer OS that featured a command line interface. The first microcomputers did not have the capacity or need for the elaborate operating systems that had been developed for mainframes and minis; minimalistic operating systems were developed, often loaded from ROM and known as monitors. One notable early disk operating system was CP/M, which was supported on many early microcomputers and was closely imitated by Microsoft's MS- DOS, which became widely popular as the operating system chosen for the IBM PC (IBM's version of it was called IBM DOS or PC DOS). In the 1. 98. 0s, Apple Computer Inc. Microsoft responded to this progress by hiring Dave Cutler, who had developed the VMS operating system for Digital Equipment Corporation. I remember the precise moment, crouching behind a crumbling mud wall, peeking into the alley near the frozen creek. That was a long time ago, but it’s wrong what they say about the past, I’ve learned, about how you can bury it. Because the past claws its way out. Looking back now, I realize I have been peeking into that deserted alley for the last twenty- six years. One day last summer, my friend Rahim Khan called from Pakistan. He asked me to come see him. Standing in the kitchen with the receiver to my ear, I knew it wasn’t just Rahim Khan on the line. It was my past of unatoned sins. After I hung up, I went for a walk along Spreckels Lake on the northern edge of Golden Gate Park. The early- afternoon sun sparkled on the water where dozens of miniature boats sailed, propelled by a crisp breeze. Then I glanced up and saw a pair of kites, red with long blue tails, soaring in the sky. They danced high above the trees on the west end of the park, over the windmills, floating side by side like a pair of eyes looking down on San Francisco, the city I now call home.
Kite runner Written by kite runner: Contributed by: nonono123: Language: English Genre: Adult Fiction: Published in: 2013: Share book: Not shared with '2015 3QTR.And suddenly Hassan’s voice whispered in my head: For you, a thousand times over. Hassan the harelipped kite runner. I sat on a park bench near a willow tree. I thought about something Rahim Khan said just before he hung up, almost as an afterthought. There is a way to be good again. I looked up at those twin kites. I thought about Hassan. I thought of the life I had lived until the winter of 1. And made me what I am today. TWOWhen we were children, Hassan and I used to climb the poplar trees in the driveway of my father’s house and annoy our neighbors by reflecting sunlight into their homes with a shard of mirror. We would sit across from each other on a pair of high branches, our naked feet dangling, our trouser pockets filled with dried mulberries and walnuts. We took turns with the mirror as we ate mulberries, pelted each other with them, giggling, laughing. I can still see Hassan up on that tree, sunlight flickering through the leaves on his almost perfectly round face, a face like a Chinese doll chiseled from hardwood: his flat, broad nose and slanting, narrow eyes like bamboo leaves, eyes that looked, depending on the light, gold, green, even sapphire. I can still see his tiny low- set ears and that pointed stub of a chin, a meaty appendage that looked like it was added as a mere afterthought. And the cleft lip, just left of midline, where the Chinese doll maker’s instrument may have slipped, or perhaps he had simply grown tired and careless. Sometimes, up in those trees, I talked Hassan into firing walnuts with his slingshot at the neighbor’s one- eyed German shepherd. Hassan never wanted to, but if I asked, really asked, he wouldn’t deny me. Hassan never denied me anything. And he was deadly with his slingshot. Hassan’s father, Ali, used to catch us and get mad, or as mad as someone as gentle as Ali could ever get. He would wag his finger and wave us down from the tree. He would take the mirror and tell us what his mother had told him, that the devil shone mirrors too, shone them to distract Muslims during prayer. But he never told on me. Never told that the mirror, like shooting walnuts at the neighbor’s dog, was always my idea. The poplar trees lined the redbrick driveway, which led to a pair of wrought- iron gates. They in turn opened into an extension of the driveway into my father’s estate. The house sat on the left side of the brick path, the backyard at the end of it. Everyone agreed that my father, my Baba, had built the most beautiful house in the Wazir Akbar Khan district, a new and affluent neighborhood in the northern part of Kabul. Some thought it was the prettiest house in all of Kabul. A broad entryway flanked by rosebushes led to the sprawling house of marble floors and wide windows. Intricate mosaic tiles, handpicked by Baba in Isfahan, covered the floors of the four bathrooms. Gold- stitched tapestries, which Baba had bought in Calcutta, lined the walls; a crystal chandelier hung from the vaulted ceiling. Upstairs was my bedroom, Baba’s room, and his study, also known as “the smoking room,” which perpetually smelled of tobacco and cinnamon. Baba and his friends reclined on black leather chairs there after Ali had served dinner. They stuffed their pipes—except Baba always called it “fattening the pipe”—and discussed their favorite three topics: politics, business, soccer. Sometimes I asked Baba if I could sit with them, but Baba would stand in the doorway. Why don’t you go read one of those books of yours?” He’d close the door, leave me to wonder why it was always grown- ups’ time with him. I’d sit by the door, knees drawn to my chest. Sometimes I sat there for an hour, sometimes two, listening to their laughter, their chatter. The living room downstairs had a curved wall with custom- built cabinets. Inside sat framed family pictures: an old, grainy photo of my grandfather and King Nadir Shah taken in 1. There was a picture of my parents’ wedding night, Baba dashing in his black suit and my mother a smiling young princess in white. Here was Baba and his best friend and business partner, Rahim Khan, standing outside our house, neither one smiling—I am a baby in that photograph and Baba is holding me, looking tired and grim. I’m in his arms, but it’s Rahim Khan’s pinky my fingers are curled around. The curved wall led into the dining room, at the center of which was a mahogany table that could easily sit thirty guests—and, given my father’s taste for extravagant parties, it did just that almost every week. On the other end of the dining room was a tall marble fireplace, always lit by the orange glow of a fire in the wintertime. A large sliding glass door opened into a semicircular terrace that overlooked two acres of backyard and rows of cherry trees. Baba and Ali had planted a small vegetable garden along the eastern wall: tomatoes, mint, peppers, and a row of corn that never really took. Hassan and I used to call it “the Wall of Ailing Corn.”On the south end of the garden, in the shadows of a loquat tree, was the servants’ home, a modest little mud hut where Hassan lived with his father. It was there, in that little shack, that Hassan was born in the winter of 1. In the eighteen years that I lived in that house, I stepped into Hassan and Ali’s quarters only a handful of times. When the sun dropped low behind the hills and we were done playing for the day, Hassan and I parted ways. I went past the rosebushes to Baba’s mansion, Hassan to the mud shack where he had been born, where he’d lived his entire life. I remember it was spare, clean, dimly lit by a pair of kerosene lamps. There were two mattresses on opposite sides of the room, a worn Herati rug with frayed edges in between, a three- legged stool, and a wooden table in the corner where Hassan did his drawings. The walls stood bare, save for a single tapestry with sewn- in beads forming the words Allah- u- akbar. Baba had bought it for Ali on one of his trips to Mashad. It was in that small shack that Hassan’s mother, Sanaubar, gave birth to him one cold winter day in 1. While my mother hemorrhaged to death during childbirth, Hassan lost his less than a week after he was born. Lost her to a fate most Afghans considered far worse than death: She ran off with a clan of traveling singers and dancers. Hassan never talked about his mother, as if she’d never existed. I always wondered if he dreamed about her, about what she looked like, where she was. I wondered if he longed to meet her. Did he ache for her, the way I ached for the mother I had never met? |
